My Work
I am interested in the Taxonomy and Systematics of Coleoptera especially the family Elateridae (Click-beetles). I am also investigating insects that inhabit the canopy-level of temperate rain forests in Chile. This is a new frontier as we have little knowledge of what lives in the canopies. Chile has a significantly high concentration of plants that are endemic (species restrict to Chile) so there is an expectation that the endemic tree species will produce a great variety of new and unique insect species.
I am fascinated by the faunal history of areas that where part of the ancient Gondwanian land mass. Clues that suggest a once continuous fauna of Gondwana can be seen in Chile where there are many taxa with close relatives in Australia and New Zealand. My studies will help to further clarify the patterns of distribution of the Gondwanian click beetle groups and to better establish phylogenetic relationships among the species and groups. This will allow me to place another element of the Chilean fauna in context with the larger biota of the globe. My work will also contribute to work by other colleagues in the Tree of Life Project.
