Expedition, January 2007
By Dr. Elizabeth T. Arias & Professor Kipling Will
Santiago and Curico

We began our expedition in Santiago, the capitol of Chile and home to most of the country's population.  A big city like this is a perfect place to stock up for the long trip ahead-- here's where we have to pick up the collecting equipment that's waiting for us and buy food, gasoline, insect "fog,"  and tasty squid for the traps. On top of all that, we still have to fit our personal gear (a month's worth of clothes, books, snacks and other supplies) into our two field vehicles. What would you pack for a three-week trip through the wilderness? (Most of us bring lots of books, since there's no TV and we can't buy English-language magazines or newspapers here. )
